Last year’s celebration of Christmas, New Year and Birthday had set the tone to the “new normal” way of celebrating. It has become more intimate~ due to quarantines and restrictions in the number of people allowed in one home (like here in Vancouver), more simple~ by celebrating at home and not eating out or traveling, more unique~ by doing virtual wine toasting and greeting each other over the internet via Zoom or Messenger videos. This pandemic also made us more ingenious and creative~ by serving our newly discovered home-cooked dishes and making cards and banners from scratch and more cost efficient~ by staying mostly at home, planting edible plants, and keeping track of our expenses due to financial challenges.

Come to think of it.. it’s not too bad after all!

Speaking of celebrations.. this month of February, we are celebrating an old time tradition of professing our love to our romantic partners in life. The most romantic, rose colored, uber sweet and the sexiest celebration of all.. the Valentine’s Day.

History of Valentine’s Day

Have you ever wondered when did the Valentine’s Day greetings and gift giving began??

Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, though written Valentine’s didn’t begin to appear until after 1400. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. (The greeting is now part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England.) Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.

By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings.

Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. Howland, known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as “scrap.” Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 145 million Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year (more cards are sent at Christmas).

Here are the Top 10 Valentine’s Day gift wish list based on 200 respondents. As a sign of my gratitude to the lovely people who helped me with the survey, I included discounts and deals especially for you guys!

All-time favorites or Covid-19 pandemic- inspired.. you decide. 😉

Top 1: Flowers

Survey says, the top V- Day gift that women would love to receive this year is non other than ~ flowers. Flowers had always been the symbol of love and romance. The red rose is a classic “I Love You” rose, making it a popular choice for Valentine’s Day.

Other favorites are Peonies, Tulips, Callia flowers, Lavender, Wild flowers and assorted dried flower arrangements.

Top 2: Romantic Couple-Time

2.1 Dinner Date at home or hotel

Second on the V- Day gift wish list is a special dinner set up at home or at a hotel for that added romantic feel. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the most doable set up might be a DIY dinner date at home, complete with candle light, romantic background music, your favorite dessert and red wine to share with. Play your favorite love songs on the background and sing a song to her/ him while you’re at it. It doesn’t have to be fancy and expensive, all you need is a quiet time together (preferably minus the kids) while reminiscing romantic stories down memory lane.

Add a romantic touch with a freshly picked flower from your garden (or the neighbor’s, lol!).

Top 3: Jewelries

Third on the women’s wishlist are jewelries, with most of the responders saying that they’d love to be surprised with a diamond ring this V- Day. So for the men out there.. you know what to do! 😉

That is right, “Diamond is *still* a Girl’s Best Friend”. So if you want to melt her heart this V-Day, this is the perfect time to give her a diamond ring (!) or a necklace, earrings or any well thought of jewelry that your woman would love to have. You know her better than anyone.

Top 4: Chocolates

It’s unique rich and sweet taste has made chocolate a very popular food product that millions enjoy every day. A lot of us are addicted to it and would even have stocks of our favorite brand to enjoy anytime at home, in the office or even in the car. It may have its reputation for causing diabetes, acne, high blood pressure and increased weight, but it has its health benefits as well. Chocolate’s antioxidant potential may have a range of health benefits. The higher the cocoa content, as in dark chocolate, the more benefits there are. Dark chocolate may also contain less fat and sugar, but it is important to check the label.

Top 5: Vacation / Hotel Overnight Stay

This pandemic had derailed all of our travel plans. That’s why it’s understandable that we all missed vacationing. Whether you’re a couple that finds romance in relaxation or in adventure, there’s always going to be that place that sparks the flame and sets the mood. This V-Day is the perfect time to plan and look into the Top Romantic Destinations Around The World, and visit with our significant other when this pandemic is all over.

Despite some restrictions, there are options on where couples or  families may go for that much needed vacation, especially without the stress of flying and quarantine/ testing requirements involved.

You can find great locations within a driving distance around you. Find a perfect place, away from the crowds, a gorgeous room with a view by clicking this AirBnb link.  You’ll have a peace of mind knowing that AirBnb strictly implements that all their home rentals strictly follow safety protocols that are implemented in the province that the property is located.

Top 6: Spa and Massage

This is my wish as well.. a full day of relaxation and de-stressing! The problem is that there are many limitations on services like spas and some locations even closed down due to Covid-19 restrictions. That’s why it’s a good idea to give a gift certificate at this time. I believe that with the all the stress and challenges that we’ve been experiencing for almost a year now, we all deserve a good and relaxing day at the spa, complete with all the works (facial and rejuvenation package) !

In the meantime, while waiting for your favorite spa to open up.. why not create a spa-like ambiance in your bedroom this V-Day and enjoy a massage by your loved one.

Light up a scented candle, play a soothing music and dim the lights for that authentic spa experience.

Top 7: Something to do with their hobbies: Plants and Pets

The home quarantine imposed on us created new hobbies and interest in gardening, farming and having pets. Though not all of us were born with a “green thumb”, useful TV/ YouTube shows, books and social media helped a lot on learning the art of gardening. To some it has become a source of happiness and even income.

Notice that I incorporated ideas and easy reference in case you want to try this wonderful hobby after reading my blog. Give your loved one something to support his/ her hobby or interest like real plants, pots, gardening tools and cute accessories for the beloved furry friend.

Top 9:Electronics and gadgets:Iphone 12 Pro, Airpods, Playstation

Now that most of us are staying at home or working from home.. gadgets and electronics are the top of mind among the men in our lives. Most of them said that they’ll be happy with a new cellphone to double for work and play, AirPods for their music, gaming upgrade to Ps5 or a new television/ audio set up to keep them and the whole family entertained during quarantine period.
